Happy Thanksgiving – Friend or Fowl!

November 27, 2008 · Comments Off

Happy Thanksgiving from us to all our readers!  Here’s a picture of Anelf and Tinuviel with a turkey in Howling Fjord.

Thanksgiving turkeys (Anelf is the one on the left of shot)

Thanksgiving turkeys (Anelf is the one on the left of shot)

The turkeys are located west of the Explorer’s league outpost at 69,64.  As well as being part of a fun quest line they are also the subject of the achievement Friend or Fowl?, requiring you to kill 15 turkey in 3 minutes.  Tab target and fire away with whaever aoe or instant shot you have.  The turkeys respawn pretty fast so its fairly easy to complete.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving day – we will – a whole day off to play WOW :)

Is WOTLK a little too …

November 24, 2008 · 6 Comments

… erm … easy?

Last night another Hunter in our guild was talking on chat about how easy he was finding it to solo elites in the expansion. He went on to say that the thing he’d died from most was running out of breath on underwater quests – i.e. he’d killed himself more times than all the mobs had killed him.

That prompted other guildies (of all classes and all levels from 70 thru 80) to start chipping in saying exactly the same thing. To prove the point, a level 78 mage who’d just asked for help killing an 80 elite came back into chat to say ‘Never mind. I just soloed him’.

Now Soldiers of Fortune is not an elite raiding guild. We’re a casual family guild. (Sorry Entrigan – I mean an elite casual family guild :-) ). Yet we’re all progressing quickly through the content with very few ‘walks of shame’ between us. Tinuviel is level 74 and has died once (running off a cliff). I (Anelf) am now 72 and the closest I got to dying was when I fell asleep at the keyboard and woke up just in time to stop myself – you guessed it – falling off a cliff. Ok, I am dressed in purples mostly from Kara, which you’d expect to last a few levels into Northrend, but I’ve not even got close to being killed – even when soloing 3-man quests.

And a good number of our guildies are easily progressing into the high-70s having done no BC end-game raiding (i.e. starting out mostly in greens).

So now I’m starting to wonder. Is WOTLK just a little bit too easy? Are Blizzard doing this deliberately and planning a fairly quick follow up with a content patch? The quests are so easy (and in many cases repetitive) that I’m not that enthused about it. The environment is beautiful, but the quests aren’t. I really hope they hot up a bit when I get out of Howling Fjord and Borean Tundra.

So what’s your experience of questing in WOTLK? Do you think Blizzard has got it right?

Update (11/25/08):

Talk about tempting fate. I died for the first time last night just after posting this. I was following Jame’s leveling guide and followed his instructions to jump into a hole into some water (something I’d done once before without problem). I landed in the water but somehow I died from the fall anyway. So I too have now killed myself more than mobs have killed me :-) . And I’m a bit annoyed that I’ve now lost my perfect ‘not died in Northrend’ record – I was hoping I could get all the way from 70 to 80 without dying :-( .

HP ate my game

November 22, 2008 · 1 Comment

Hi. Anelf here again. I’m a bit happier now, so I’ve deleted the previous contents of this post. To cut a long story short, I got back from a three week trip and found my laptop wouldn’t boot. So I wasn’t a happy bunny.

I’ve spent most of the day repairing the OS and it seems to be getting back to normal now, so I’m not as angry as I was. And maybe I was unfair in completely blaming HP. I really wish I’d not bought an HP laptop, but the fault this time could just as easily be Microsoft’s (I have Windows Vista :-( ).

And something happened while I was playing WOTLK on my backup machine that really cheered me up …

You know what Northrend is like right now. Full to overflowing with lots of people stepping on each other’s toes and ninja-ing quest mobs off each other. I was in Howling Fjord on the Dead Man’s Debt quest – the one where you have to get Black Conrad’s Treasure. I was standing on my own waiting patiently for a respawn, when a Tauren Shammie rode up on the same quest. Thinking he was being clever, he decided to put down his Magma Totem on the respawn spot to try to ninja his way to the front of the queue. I stood watching him standing my his totem, resetting it each time it expired. He did this about four times.

He can’t have read up on that quest because he obviously didn’t realize that the quest doesn’t start until you dig in a dirt mound. The dirt mound respawned behind him, so I dug it up without him noticing. The ghosts then attacked me and I killed them and grabbed my quest loot.

I took great pleasure in giving the would-be ninja a little /pat and a /lol before I rode off. It makes me smile every time I think about it :-) , but I don’t suppose ninja-boy has learned any lessons from it.

For the most part, I’ve been pleasantly surprised how smoothly my Northrend questing has gone, seeing as how busy it is. It looks like the dynamic respawn rates are working quite well.

Update (11/23/08 8.55am):

I finished installing WOTLK on my HP laptop late last night (after spending most of the day installing Windows updates). I downloaded all my addins, launched WoW, logged into my banker alt, and after 10 seconds I was getting streaks of white noise across my screen. Then the whole OS crashed. This morning, the screen stays completely blank when I try to start the laptop. This is the same problem (a dead graphics card) I had back in February. HP grudgingly replaced the laptop then (after weeks of phone calls from me). Now I’m out of warranty, so it looks like I’m stuffed.

I thought I’d share this with you all in case some of you are thinking of getting a laptop for Christmas. I bought the HP Pavilion dv2500 in August 2007. It lasted until February 2008 before the graphics card burned out. I got a dv2700 as a replacement in April (yes – it took HP over 2 months to replace a machine under warranty. The dv2500 was discontinued by then). Now the dv2700 has experienced exactly the same failure.

If you are looking at buying a laptop for WoW - don’t buy from HP. They clearly have a reliability problem, and their customer support (when I used them back in February) was terrible. (I won’t go into the boring details here, but I googled for ‘HP customer service blog’ and found a lot of blog entries like this one - several comments on that blog refer to HP laptop deaths and support experiences like my own).

WOTLK week 1 – went fishing

November 22, 2008 · 2 Comments

Sorry for the lack of posts this last week.  Like many bloggers and podcasters, I had a lot more than usual to say on the run up to Wrath and then once I got the expansion, all I wanted to do was play.

I have leveled some over the last week, although I have deliberately not raced to 80.  Partly, this is because I enjoy the leveling experience and don’t want to get it over with too fast; I have also been leveling my trade skills (especially fishing, more below); have been obsessed with a couple of achievements; and because Anelf was away for the first week of Wrath and I didn’t want to get too far ahead of him.  Now he is back we can level together.  OK, so this is what I have been up to with some, hopefully, useful suggestions:

  • I finished off my Netherwing rep grind to get my netherdrakes.  These daily quests in Outland also gave experience each day, as did killing the mobs.  Not as much experience as Northrend, but still some.
  • I completed the quests in Howling Fjord, earning the achievement Fjord explorer.  I used Jame’s leveling guide to help organize the order of the quests.  Jame actually suggests starting in Borean Tundra (BT), but says on his site that you can do Howling Fjord (HF) first too, if you like.  I am working through BT with Anelf now.  Just my preference, but I prefer the landscape and quests in HF.
  • I was able to solo every quest in HF, including 2 and 3 person group quests, and quests involving killing elite mobs.  The only quest, and its follow ons I was not able to do was the one at the quarry, where you use the little plane with a grappling hook to pick up sacks.  This was bugged in the beta, and still appears to be bugged, I could not select or grapple any of the sacks.
  • I thought the quests at the explorers league outpost the most fun.  I laughed over the obvious referenced to one of my favorite films, The Big Lebowski, and had to go rewatch it.  Hunter tip for the quest with the tamed hawks.  When you have to set your hawk on the hawks flying around, you can use feign death to your advantage.  This part of the chain is a bit time consuming, it’s hard to get to find hawks in range to target (the ones perched on rocks are easiest, but you can hit them out of the air too).  The hawks often come in pairs.  If you find 2 hawks on a rock, and send your tamed hawk against one, the other will attack you.  But if you feign death as soon as you send your tamed hawk in (with your pet on passive), you can wait for the cooldown on your tamed hawk, and then use it to get the second hawk too, rather than having to kill it.
  • It is very quick to level gathering skills.  My herbalism is now maxed out at 450, only picking starting zone herbs.  Anelf maxed out skinning in one day.  Fishing took longer, but is no where near as time consuming to level as it used to be.
  • I got to Dalaran early using the BG method.  To do this, your friend, already in Dalaran, forms a group with you and then enters a BG queue as a group.  When you get the call for the BG you enter and then /afk.  This deserts the BG and transports the whole group (including you) back to the place where the group leader joined the BG queue – Dalaran.  Set your hearthstone here, grab the flight path, do the quest to get attuned the to the violet gate transport stone to the ground below, and you’re all set.
  • I spent a lot of time fishing in Dalaran.  See El’s great little video on fishing in Dalaran – link here.  I was very lucky and got my Giant Sewer Rat fairly quickly.  I have also been fishing at the fountain, and have got most but not all the coins for the achievements.
  • Another Dalaran obsession is the achievement Higher Learning.  The link here to WOWhead tells you where you can find the books (see the comments).  I’ve found four so far.
  • One reason to get to Dalaran early, was the cooking dailies.  To level cooking above 415 you need to do these, as the dailies award you Dalaran Cooking Awards, which can be used to purchase new recipes.  They also give you Northern Spices, which are needed for the higher recipes.  You need a lot of these spices.  They are not soulbound and can be traded.  I have brought my alts, Bluebear and Soupgdragon to Dalaran to do the cooking quest, so that they can supply Tinuviel with additional spices.
  • So that’s about it.  I am currently close to 74, having completed all of HF some of BT and a bit if Dragonblight.  My friend and guildmate Neokia may be 80, as I write this.  If so grats to Neokia, and to my other guildie and excellent tank, Keeferblah, who was challenging him to first Soldiers of Fortune member to 80.  It will be a while yet before Anelf and I are up there, but it looks to be a fun ride.  Thumbs up for a great expansion :)

Wrath Day 1 – success

November 14, 2008 · 2 Comments

Imaginative travel options in Wrath - riding the harpoon gun

I almost feel like writing a retraction for my previous post :)  Day 1 of Wrath went off without a hitch (almost) for me.  After several days of disrupted play and preparation for Wrath, the day itself went smoothly.  The game was quick to install, taking at most 20 mins to download and update, my addons all worked, and I was up and playing straight away.

There did not seem to be too much lag or competition for resources.  Sure, a lot of areas were busy, and herbs were thin on the ground, but the dynamic respawn rate kept quest items available.

The only problem was the queue at busy times to get onto the server.  I found myself in a queue of 600 with an estimated wait time of 36 minutes.  In the end it took about 25 minutes to get back on.

I decided to start in the Howling Fjord as I preferred the scenery and some of the quests in the zone when I tried it out on the beta.  Having fun so far, didn’t get many hours play in yesterday, at the moment I am about half way through level 70.

What was your experience like?  And which zone did you choose to start in?

I have also been following Jame’s leveling guide to steer me in a logical direction through the quests.  I know the bit I found the most difficult in the beta, was running around huge zones exploring, picking up quests as I found them, and then not remembering where the quests where from or where they needed to be returned to.  I’ve used Jame’s guides before, they are very good if you need something to point you in the right direction:

Jame’s leveling guide – Borean Tundra (alliance) (horde)

Jame’s leveling guide – Howling Fjord (alliance) (horde)

Jame’s leveling guide – Dragonblight (alliance) (horde)

Bereg my Gorilla has been doing a fantastic job as my sidekick, whether on one or several mobs, there’s no stopping him.  I just wish he’d stop scratching his butt, it’s like having a pet tauren!  OK, I’m off for a short stint in Northrend before work.  Catch ya later – have fun.

Preparation for Wrath – are Blizzard prepared?

November 12, 2008 · 5 Comments

illidanandarthasWrath hits the stores at midnight tonight (well those that aren’t 7-11s) – I wonder if Blizzard top brass are having a bit of a Cinderella complex right now, worried that they will find themselves in rags next to a pumpkin rather than a beautiful golden coach.  On recent evidence they do not seem very prepared:

  • The Beta had a lot of stability problems right up until close, in fact I didn’t play on it half as much as I expected I would, because of all of the downtime.
  • A lot of known bugs (hunter pets cower for instance) have not been fixed.
  • Some talents have not been fully implemented and are coming in later patches.
  • When BRK tried to get several hundred people together in one place for running of the bulls in memory of Ezra, Blizzard told him to disperse as the servers couldn’t handle it.  Sure enough the servers died.  Aren’t several hundred people going to get together in one place in the starting areas for Wrath? Hmmm…
  • Last minute maintenance and hotfixes seems to be throwing up some major problems; problems Blizzard are not able to fix quickly.  All this downtime is not good for business.  Most people realize maintaining a complex game the size of WOW is not simple, but they get frustrated, especially when they only have certainly times to play and the server is down during those times.
  • Communication with the player community is still a work in progress with Blizzard.  It really annoys me when we get announcements of anticipated 3hour downtime.  Then after 3 hours, announcements that there will be a news update within 2 hours, followed by silence for more than 2 hours.  Talk to people Blizzard.  People are a lot more understanding if you tell them what is going on, and if you stick to published times for communication updates.

Lets hope this is not a shadow of doom, and that Wrath gets off without too many hitches.  But I foresee a lot of downtime, poor communication, and frustration over the coming weeks /sigh.

Blizzard, you are not prepared.

Preparation for Wrath – are you prepared?

November 11, 2008 · 2 Comments

I wasn’t working today, and I had it all planned out, a whole day of WOWing to do my final preparations for Wrath (I am working tomorrow), but Blizzard had other ideas.  First, another maintenance morning. Oh well, I can live with that.  But then, the servers were down for the whole of the day as the Blizzard postal service lost all our mail.  Its no coincidence that the community forums are usually down at the same time as these unforseen lockouts.  Rotten luck, but I guess I don’t blame Blizzard, these things happen, and I am sure they fixed it as fast as they could.  I am not going to QQ except for one thing – if you are going to put a message on the log in screen that there will be a news update in 2 hours time, make sure there is one, even if you only change the time and then repost the same message.  Time obviously passes differently in the Blizzard universe.  But for the ‘addicts’ check back for their fix every 2 hours, breaking this timed promise for an update was the most frustrating of all.

Anyway, on to being prepared – this is what I have done or am in the process of finishing off:

  • Chose my leveling spec and pet. Check.  I will be leveling 50/11/0 with a gorilla.  I am going to change my current spec just slightly to max out endurance training and pick up thick hide (a gorilla looks so pathetically sad when he dies, all deflated with his face in the dirt, that I feel the need to make him a bit tougher, as I am not very gentle with him.)
  • I’ve attempted to empty Tinuviel’s bags and bank.  This is a work in progress.  I was hoping to spend some of today, rounding off some Azeroth rep grinds, at least to the point that I could hand in stacks of some of the things I have sitting in the bank, like scourge stones.  I still have way too much stuff in her bank though, and most of it is soulbound so hard to send to my mule.
  • Empty my quest log.  Check.  It’s fairly empty there are a couple of group quests still in there, but I think I can get rid of all but 1.
  • Make money. Check.  I have doubled my target gold amount for entry into Wrath, thanks to a little trafficking in vanity pets.  I don’t have anywhere near enough to by a caravan tundra mammoth, but I’m comfortably off by my standards.
  • Get chocolate cake recipe.  Check.  I have been trying to get this one for Tinuviel for so long.  Finally, it dropped.  So I can get on with my cooking achievements without having to get to Dalaran and use cooking daily rewards to pay for a recipe.
  • Get a Mr Pinchy magical crawdad pet.  Check.  Another one I have been after for so long.  I have fished up the box before, but not got the pet.
  • Stock up on herbs, crawdads, and netherweave.  Check.  These should help me level alchemy/inscription, cooking, and first aid a little before needed Northrend materials.  I might consider selling my frostweave initially, rather than leveling first aid, and continue to use netherweave bandages, if the price of frostweave is very high.
  • Have a bank sale with Piratejoe.  I haven’t completely sold all my primals.  I missed the boat on them, and I am hoping some Death Knights are going to want to power level trade skills and may nudge the price up again as supply dwindles.  I am selling off most other things (and hopefully Blizzard haven’t lost all my ah profits that were I am sure waiting for me in the mail.)
  • Catch old Ironjaw and/or a rare fish.  Fail -so far.  I like fishing, but I am not patient at it over long periods.  Still, I’ve fished up about 400 fish in IF over the last week, and no rare fishies for me.
  • Raise my reputations with cenarion circle, argent dawn and timbermaw hold.  Well, I raised my rep, but I am not exalted with any of them yet.
  • Get to exhalted with Netherwing and Sha’tari Skyguard.  Bah, I should have started this earlier.  Actually, I haven’t done badly at raising my rep, especially with the Netherwing, and have enjoyed the Netherwing quests, but I still have a few days to exalted.  Previously, I was happy with my gryphon, but after collecting 50+ vanity pets for Skinker, I turned my eye to that tempting Albino drake and 50 mounts.

I am sure there are 101 other things I should be doing/have done.  But that’s it for now.  OK, I am going to see if the realms are back up yet, goodbye for now.  Don’t forget to park your character near the boat to Northrend on Wednesday night.  See you in Wrath!

New pets straight off the boat in Northrend WOTLK

November 11, 2008 · 4 Comments

Azeroth and Outland prepare for war in a new land – Northrend.  Many hunters will be amongst the army that sails out to these new lands to battle the Lich King and his legions.  When exploring new lands, the intrepid hunter will always have an eye to new beasts that can be tamed to assist him in his battles.  Fortunately, a small exploratory force called Beta travelled the land and brought back reports of its regions and beasts.  Much of the knowledge on the beasts that can be tamed by hunters has been collected together in the Petopia library.  For your pleasure, I have extracted information on those beasts that can be tracked down and tamed immediately on stepping from the boats.

worgblacktNorthrend is a wild place.  There are many ferocious wolves in its woods and hills.  In the Borean Tundra, to the NE of the horde and alliance strong holds, around the Geyser Fields, you will find the black Oilstained Wolf, while in the Howling Fjord NW quarter you will find his cousin the black Fanggore Wolf, and on the large island to the west, near the Tuskkar’s village of Kamagua, roams the white Spearfang Wolf.

arcticcondorwhitetWolves are not the only ferocious creatures you will meet in the first areas you venture into in this new land.  In the snowy lands in the far east of the Borean Tundra, carrion birds fly overhead.  Beautiful black and white condors, with massive wing spans.  But be wary, they have a screech that will make your knees tremble and weaken your ability to defend yourself.

browneagletchimeraskinblue_01tCondors are not the only birds in this new land.  Eagles and hawks fly over the planes.  In the Howling Fjord, to the East of Utgarde Keep, you may see Duskwing Eagles and to the South-East, Fjord Hawks.  In the Borean Tundra, on the western edge of the Geyser Fields, you may glimpse oil-covered Hawks.  Be cautious traveller, these birds like shiny objects and have a habit of snatching weapons out of the hands of the unwary.  Two other winged beauties are to be found in the Howling Fjord: the Darkclaw Bat, in the far NW (NW of the Apothecary’s Camp) and the Frostwing Chimera. The Chimera’s are a difficult beast to tame, and only the most skilled beastmaster may successfully tame this exotic animal.  They are found on the large island to the west, near Kamagua.

If you enjoy hunting with cunning pets, in the same area as the bats, you will find Riven Widows, cunning and fearsome black and red spiders.

bearskinbrowntSome hunters prefer a sturdier animal to fight at there side, particularly if they are adventuring solo through new territories.  If this is you, there are a number of beasts, some familiar some less so that may be of interest.  First the faithful bear -honey brown colored Rapid Brown Bears can be found on the island to the South West of the Kamagua isle.  Watch out for pirates on this island, they may coerce you into joining their band and doing tasks for them (though lucrative if you don’t mind working with pirates).  Early explorers found they could tame Arctic grizzly cubs, unfortunately their mothers have found a way to make these prized hunter pets immune from hunters taming.  If you favor a white bear, you will need to wait until you have moved up 2 ranks in order to have the skill to tame one.

jormungarlarvatFjord crawlers, an ivory colored crab, live under the cliffs to the west of Apothecary Camp in Howling Fjord.  In Borean Tundra, Sand Turtles wander the shore to the west of Warsong Hold, near Garrosh’s Landing.  But one of the most exotic pets a hunter can snare and tame in the early part of this new land is the wonderous Tundra Crawler, a beautiful purple worm-like creature.  You must be a highly skilled beastmaster to be able to tame this exotic animal.  You will find them in the snowy areas in the far west and North-west of the Borean Tundra in sight of the walls of the Temple City of En’kilah.

92105But perhaps the creature hunters have heard most about from this new land, since none exist in the known world is the – exotic Rhino.  This beast, as large as a clefthoof, but tameable by the most skilled beastmaster.  It is fearsome to behold when charging towards you.  It has the ability to knock enemies back from it up into the air.  Some even come with their own little pets, a tick bird, perched on their horn.  Rhinos can be found on the Borean Tundra to the South-West of Valiance Keep.

Arrh!!! In the middle of writing this article Petopia went down!  How can we cope without Petopia?  Quick, Mania, help!  I will post this for now, but will add the couple I am missing (grey wolves, black raven-like carrion birds, and red crabs when the site is up again.)

Tinuviel’s latest hunter talent spec (on the eve of 3.0.3)

November 4, 2008 · 4 Comments

I have been reading the updated Elitist Jerks Beastmaster Bible, and this has lead me to try out a new level 70 – 50/11/0 talent build.

The theory behind this build is:

  • The 51 point beastmaster talent is dropped in order to take 1/2 in Go For the Throat over in the Marksman Tree.  This increases your pets DPS (although means you are not able to use exotic pets).  Pets are not able to generate enough focus using Bestial Discipline.  I miss the extra pet talent points to be able to pick up talents like Bloodthirsty, giving my pet health and happiness, and boar speed, giving my pet extra speed.  But I do not miss out on any dps talents or the major tanking talents for my gorilla.  This does increase my pets dps.
  • 3/3 careful aim and 2/5 mortal shots provides more dps according to the elitist jerks theorycrafters than 5/5 mortal shots.  I believe them, my personal dps has also increased with this build.
  • This is a raid/high dps build so I have also take the points in improved revive pet for now – I may move those later for Wrath – although my gorilla does have a habit of dying sometimes when we get over enthusiastic about how many mobs he can handle when I have no mana to heal him, so this is quite useful.
  • I have tried 3/5 in frenzy before, but elitist jerks suggest sticking to 4/5, saying 3/5 shows a significant dps drop.
  • Everyone likes 2/2 in spirit bond – it seems a strong for solo pve, raiding and pvp
  • Animal handler in its patch 3.0.2 form is not useful (if you are close to the hit cap), as your pet now receives 100% of your hit rating.  However, patch 3.0.3 drops today, and changes animal handler to expertise.  This will be a straight dps increase for pets, reducing the amount of time they are parried.  Some posters on elitist jerks are advocating 2/2 over here.  But I could not find anywhere I wanted to steal the points from.  I think some might steal them from a non-dpsing talent like spirit bond, but as I use a gorilla for soloing, I need the healing boost.
  • Ferocious Inspiration always was a must have, it is now even better, being a raid wide buff.

I tested my previous build (see previous post here) and this one out on a level 60 target dummy (the level 70 ones were being used and had debuffs stacked on them, I wasn’t sure how this would affect the results).  I used my cat with rake and claw.  I shot using an auto/steady rotation only (no buffs, except aspect of the hawk).  I tested each build for 5 x 1min stints on the dummy (this was about how long my meagre mana bar lasted).

The old build dps ranged from 1,228 to 1,280 (with my dps ranging from 829-871 and Gwind’s from 346-434).  The new builds dps ranged from 1,321 to 1,494 (and hit over 1,500 at one point) (with my dps ranging from 840-966 and Gwind’s from 387-481).  SOLD!

Of course, this may all change after 3.0.3 has settled in, and the theorycrafters have done more testing.  Cats are getting nerfed, exotic pets buffed, and some pet skills are having their focus costs reduced.  But I am still not keen on the exotics, and my wolf is also doing well compared to even my cat pre-nerf (furious howl now scales and is a nice raid buff that helps my dps and those of my raid members, as well as the wolf), so I don’t think I am going to change drastically from this.

If I continued with a similar build while leveling, I might take the 51 talent again during my 70s, but I may drop it again at 80 in order to get Readiness, and have double Bestial Wraths or traps.
